Evga Ftw Dt 1080 Black Screen After Start Up

This is NOT a Tech Support post, This is a PSA post spreading awareness of a major issue and giving other users of EVGA 1080 FTW GPU's information on the status, possible cause and possible solution of a small but very serious amount of Nvidia cards released with inoperable faults in circulation. In my long and stressful search for the cause of my problem, I came across an important bit of information that has gone severely undocumented. I am not a Tech specialist, I do not have authority or professional insight into this issue. I posted this PSA so that people who had similar PC issues after a GTX 1080 FTW install wouldn't have to go through all the different troubleshooting steps I had to go through just to end up where I did a few days later: Some of the cards released had been officially declared by EVGA to be inoperable due to a fault that essentially makes the card an invisible countdown timer to a PC crash, and there was nothing I could do to fix it myself.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: THE FAULT IS, I REPEAT, IS PRESENT IN HYBRID EVGA 1000 SERIES CARDS

An excerpt of my recent chat with EVGA support confirms that RMA's provided after 8/31/16 WILL be tested for faults and defects, so BE SURE to order your RMA through EVGA, they should test every RMA request to ensure it's not a repeat of the last card! An excerpt will be provided below the main body of information

I will mark sections of this post based on their relevance to the issue with titles, so read the bolded headers for a quick reference and Italicized sub headers for in depth reading

OVERVIEW OF THE ISSUE/SOLUTION

If any of you have gone through the process of installing a new EVGA GTX 1080 FTW EDIT 5: Also affects Hybrid cards just to find out it may have caused serious issues you know that it's a headache. Lucky for us, on August 30th, EVGA support posted here! that they have identified the issue, only a little while later to confirm they have a fix for it! EVGA team member Jacob F.! stated here! that if you experience problems where you get these specific errors (Crashing/Freezing/Black Screen/Restarts) that you should contact EVGA Support directly! either by submitting a ticket or calling them directly.

The EVGA board mod for /r/TEAMEVGA, /u/EVGA_Erin has added further insight to the situation. I hope this helps ease any stress or doubt about support quality, I promise you the support EVGA provided me has been well beyond the normal standard for support! They've kept up with me and provided all the facts I needed to get this post in PSA standard, massive respect to the EVGA support team as a whole, you all deserve a very big thanks and home baked multi-layered ice cream cake for going above and beyond expectation! And to those on the team who've contributed to making as many people as possible aware of this issue; I want to personally thank you very much for the time you've take to handle all these different cases, it means a lot to me when I see people looking out for their communities, stay classy EVGA.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS TO GET STARTED ON SOLVING A POSSIBLE FAULT

To get started on a RMA you'll need to provide your GPU's serial number, your mailing/postal address, have an EVGA account, and can provide an invoice (Proof of purchase, usually by email from the provider you ordered from, submitted as a PNG or xml file) they can set you up with an Advance RMA. This is where you are sent a new part to replace your old one, and once it arrives you place your previous part into the packaging and mail it back to EVGA undamaged for no fee (Except a $1 placeholder charge in case you do damage the GPU, in which case you must pay for repair fees, so be sure to see if you qualify for a RMA by reading support).

ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE/ADVICE I personally requested an RMA and currently am waiting for all the information to be processed for shipping, I suggest you do too if you've purchased your card recently and experienced these issues. In the event it doesn't fix your problem, you now know it's not a GPU fault and can start searching in other places for the root cause of the issue. This all is quite an inconvenience, but in mass producing such delicate technology errors are bound to happen, either on the consumer side or the producer's, and even though the chance of a faulty card is very small, sometimes you just get a bad roll of the dice. Every company does have issues like this at some point, so I advise you to not let this experience ruin your opinion of EVGA products in the future. It was a genuine error that was too isolated to be accurately fixed before sale. Personally, I think that the team at EVGA is very efficient in handling these issues with the best outcome for the consumer in mind. If you get bad luck like me, just make a quick call to their support and see if the new card is your solution. It has worked for many others, and all it takes is a little waiting and confirming that you haven't damaged the GPU at all.

CONCLUSION

In essence you really don't have much to lose in this process besides time you could be spending gaming, but again, bad luck is random. I hope this helps anyone with the EVGA GTX 1080 FTW card series. Please note that feedback on this post for whether or not it solved your problem and describing it could help you and others find a solution to your individual issues, so cooperation would be very helpful for the rest of the community if you could provide details on whether or not this worked and what your specific issue is if this wasn't the cause of the problem. Thank you for your time, have a good day.

EXTRA INFORMATION/IMPORTANT UPDATE SPECIFICS

My specs, troubleshooting, temperatures, and personal experience with a faulty card

*Hi, OP here: For anyone wondering, I ran an AMD FX-8350 with the GTX 1080 FTW card I had and when it didn't crash while playing a heavy intensive game (BF4, BF1 Beta, Doom, Rust) it was operating at CPU 45o C with 65%-85% CPU load with GPU at 57o C and 100% GPU load, so no bottlenecking and very nice temp,

*ASUS MOBO has nice transfer rate, 16g RAM, PCI 2.0 slot for GPU, AM3+ CPU socket, 3 Case fans, Big R4 Define case, Upgraded CPU heat sink to a bigger mounted version with 2 CPU fans, 2TB HDD, DVD Drive, Wireless adapter in expansion slot, 750 Watt PSU, Windows 10 Anniversary OS, DDR3 Ram no overclocking on CPU, FTW GPU obviously overclocked by default.

*Idle temps were around 10o C for CPU and GPU, Fans were kept at high speeds constantly, CPU loads up to 20% at most, google chrome taking up about 22%, GPU loads barely hit 10% most of the time.

*In terms of my own tries at fixing the crashes, I tried adding more fans, essentially turning my PC case into a computer hot air exhaust blower, Reinstalling windows 3 times, bios updates, complete driver wipes, multiple stress tests of ram, gpu, cpu, and psu, old drivers (caused DP port to stop working, different issue solved by new drivers), rollbacks, over-clocking certain aspects, under-clocking certain aspects, debug mode, windows repair, using tuning software, uninstalling tuning software, custom power modes, factory power modes, and a few other tricks before coming across the post detailing the faulty cards.

*Stress tests were for RAM (Crash), Voltage (stable), Memory and Voltage Frequency (Underclocking resulted in stability and severely reduced crash rate, did not stop crashing), CPU temp (stable, no crash), GPU temp (variable, no crash yet), CPU speed (Full load crashed GPU drivers once), GPU speed (Crash), Memory Speed, Transfer rate, Memory load (Slowdown at higher rates), GPU load (Randomly got very hot), and windows corruption (Minor files detected, no issue caused).

Update stating that I will provide more information on RMA results ASAP, request that you all do the same

*Fingers crossed that the RMA provides a working card, will come back and start posting tl;dr stress reports and in depth reports for the replacement. I'd like for some people still in possession of faulty cards to do some, any or all of the tests I've listed so we can help determine the difference between a faulty card and a different, rig related issue and inform the general public about said difference.

Warning, length wall of text ahead, if you need a tl;dr read the important information I listed for a general overview

Here is the excerpt promised in the important update (Edit 5):

Parker M	(He's the EVGA Support I talked about, they do have web chat support listed on their "Service" tab on the main site for EVGA)

Fri, 09/02/16 11:37:23 am America/Chicago

Welcome to EVGA Web Chat. You are now being assisted by Parker M. Hello, how can I assist you today?

          *Removed my real name*,

11:38:14 am

I requested an RMA and want to be sure it's fault tested for the specific issue a small number of cards have Support said it will they know the defect and will tea test for it*

          Parker M

11:39:40 am

Yes since your RMA was recently submitted.

*But really I don't feel like posting my actual name on here sorry*,

11:40:11 am

Also a heads up, I made a post to Reddit's nvidia board detailing my expierence with the issue and directing people who have it to contact EVGA directly Also noted that RMA's after 8/31 should be tested, and that it affects mainly FTW and select other EVGA cards

11:41:08 am

Is the information correct or do I need to edit the PSA announcement? It's on the front page of the nvidia sub Reddit right now for "what's hot 11:42:12 am I posted it under the name JakSoulbright

          Parker M

11:43:13 am

I believe that is what our PM team posted on the forums. The issues did not affect all the cards only a small few. However we are aware of the issues and the new RMAs we submit are checked for the issues since we now know about it.

*The sound of a name disappearing...*,

11:44:27 am

Good, I was sure to link the EVGA form post where I learned of the information, and encourage people to try an RMA for the good chance of it being a solution Directly linking a support team comment I also posted my expierence with support and reccomended that people stay positive

11:45:10 am

Unnecessary information, mainly me stating that I'm trying to be factual

11:46:09 am
